What I did today: Family Photos

I know I've done posts about family walls before, but I thought it might be fun to show you the process when dealing with multiple frame sizes and shapes.  One of my amazing clients I am currently working with has a collection on family photos going all the way to her great great grandparents.  I was so happy to get to work with her to get those photos out of the folders and boxes and up on display!  The Great Frame Up did a terrific job with this project and I think the framed photos and momentos look great in her sitting room -- can't wait to share the finished space!

Beautiful bones in the before -- vintage and custom furnishings, a gorgeous Yves Delorme chandelier and ever so subtle wide stripes on the robin's egg walls.

If you are a visual person like me, this is the easiest way to hang frames, especially when dealing with multiple sizes.

After creating paper cutouts of each frame, I came up with a layout on the floor.  My client has her photos arranged by generation, placing each generation on a different wall.  This wall features great-great grandparents. 

The paper cutouts get taped to the wall in the chosen configuration, evolved from the one on the floor.

 (Note the holiday paper being used -- I purchased waaaaay too much of this stuff!)

It is so easy to hang the photos once the paper cutouts are up!

Displaying meaningful items

One of my favorite things to do while decorating a room is accessorizing.  Even better, I love using items that have special meaning to my clients, putting items on display that have just been stored away.  For instance, I found this bag in a box on a bookshelf in one of my re-do's. 

 Filled with pink sand and shells collected by the children from a recent beach trip, they were special enough to keep, but were just adding to the clutter on the bookshelves.

 

By placing them in an inexpensive jar, they become a feature amongst the books.

Sock Hop Birthday Party

 So, this is my third party post on my Embellish blog.  While it's a bit of a departure from my regular decorating blogging, I so love decorating for a party, and I love to be able to share my ideas for the decor and celebration.
Thanks for indulging me!

 This year, our theme was a sock hop.  

Here's a look at our dining room, come "diner" for the evening:

 I created the chandelier centerpiece with my fabulous Cricut, making 10's from record-like shapes. 

 Old 33's were melted in the oven to create the plates and old fashioned cups in fun pink and turquoise await chocolate milkshakes.

Here's a view of the "dance hall" with 45's and tissue paper flowers hung from the ceiling.  Circle skirts are ready for the guests on the back of the sofa.

 Miniature cookie hamburgers and cake french fries for snacking.

The girls added vintage kitties on their circle skirts made by the birthday girl's Grandmother.

While we waited for the glue to dry, the girls learned some 50's dances -- the hand jive, the bunny hop, the stroll and of course, the mashed potato and twist.

 The skirts were a real hit!

To fuel up for more dancing, the girls had old-fashioned bottles of coke, hamburgers, french fries,

And milkshakes, of course!

I made the embellishments on the straw with the Cricut -- so cute!

Enticing Entry

This home has a nice entry area from the front door.  The homeowner contacted me to give it a little more personality.

This was just about accessorizing and layering.  I added large baskets under the table to house gloves and scarves and things that tend to pile up at the entry.  A mirror with an iron scroll detail, artwork the couple already owned, vases in golds and greys and a beautiful lantern make the entry more inviting.

We also added photos up the staircase.

Before, this gorgeous bench was dwarfed by the two-story wall behind it and the wood looked uninviting.

A large weathered metal tile fills up the wall and feed sacks turned into throw pillows add softness to the bench.

 

I love how the entry rug pulls everything together!

 This beautiful cabinet from the client's grandmother got accessorized inside and above.

Makes a great first impression!

Different Dining Room

My client inherited a red dining room when she purchased her home.  She contacted me because she was tired of seeing her dark walls.

I lightened the walls with a taupey-grey color, added a rug in gold and grey and recovered their dining chairs.  A mirror was relocated to reflect the light from the windows and gorgeous sconces were added for light and a little drama.

By hanging the drapery higher on the wall, the windows appear larger and give the room more height.

Now, they are light and bright.

I neglected to get a good photo of the sconces -- love the rustic iron and delicate crystal combination!

Mod Master

This couple contacted me to help their "blah" master bedroom.  I loved their modern bed, beautiful photos and custom paintings and used them as a catalyst for their new decor.

This modern room is about textures and contrast of dark and light.  

The white on the walls and simple curtains hung on modern grommets brighten the space.

The white fur rug adds amazing texture.

 I painted the dark brown background to showcase beautiful white orchids displayed on simple wooden boxes and to coordinate with the bedding.

This corner got a little refresher too.

The rocker was replaced with a cool white leather chair and ottoman.  Family photos were rearranged to fill the walls.
