Maya Wood and Company -- Built-in Bookshelves

I really wish I had a photo of this completed space for you (working on it!), but since Maya has these gorgeous photos of his work in there, I'll at least show that part!!

My client purchased this beautiful older home after living in new construction and was having difficulty with furniture placement and storage in this room. It has gorgeous mouldings and rounded steps leading into it, but they family of 5 really needed to be able to use the space more efficiently.

This is the back wall of the room. On the opposite side is a beautiful fireplace (I'll get photos, I promise!!). The kids used this television for gaming and lounging when they had friends over. The sofa faces directly away from the fireplace and the room lacked light.
Maya and I designed this built-in to provide storage and lighting as well as an opportunity to showcase items.

By relocating the television to the other side of the room, I was able to incorporate a large sectional that can seat seven people and also allows for viewing the fireplace.

Integrated lighting in the built-ins brightens the space. Closed cabinet doors allow for concealed storage of toys, crafts and games.

Another great collaboration!

Maya Wood and Company - Banquette

I've had the opportunity to work with some amazingly talented local professionals here in Charlottesville and I am so proud to share with you the work performed by Maya Wood and Company for my clients! You can check out more at www.mayawoodandcompany.com.

First off, is one of my favorites, mostly because I love it when I pose a challenge and Maya accepts it and runs with it. Here's my "sketch":
From this scrawl, Maya's team built this:

It fits the table perfectly and looks like it's always been a part of the breakfast room!
As you can tell, the worksmanship is gorgeous.

It's hard to tell from the photos, but the fabric has a metallic glaze, giving it a little sheen.

The rest of the room is still a work in progress -- hope to be able to share more soon.
More beautiful pieces by Maya to come!

Oh, Homegoods, how I love Thee. Peacock Mirror

I've been tempted on several occasions to write a post like this, but I can't pass this find up without sharing. If you know me, you know I love Homegoods. I really can't tell you how excited I was to learn we were getting one here in C-ville and the employees already know me, since I'm in the store at least once a week. I am always finding items there that I've seen elsewhere for much more. Here's this week's find:

This HUGE, gorgeous mirror is $799 at Homegoods.
That's pricey for Homegoods, but I knew I'd seen it before:
That's a pretty big savings, no?!

An Embellished Christmas

I spent this Christmas Eve playing Santa's helper for one of my clients. This re-do is a Christmas gift from husband to wife. He wanted to create a Zen-like retreat in the master bathroom for his wife and he wanted to create it while she was at work on Christmas Eve!

They had a great start -- gorgeous tub, water basins, even beautiful bone mirrors, but were stumped when it came to making the space more inviting. We started with the walls (so fortunate to have a painter willing to work at 6:30 am on Christmas eve!!). We used a deeper taupe called canoe by Sherwin Williams.

The mirrors are beautiful, but small for the space.
We chose new light fixtures with Asian flair that had more length to fill the vertical space and I placed a wall mounted orchid to fill the width of the vanity, but still allow for storage on top. (A couple of shipping issues led to a broken shade......new one is on order!!)
We added teak accents with the mat and new towel rack.
A framed palm fond and candle sconces fill the space above.

The wall above the beautiful tub needed something larger than the shelving the homeowners had chosen (and they didn't like how little the shelves held).

I found this great piece of carved wood art at Patina Antiques, Etc.
A teak shelving unit provides storage at a convenient spot accessible while soaking.

The bamboo blinds were great for creating the Zen mood, but the bare walls were cold.
Easily remedied with some accessories!
Check out the amazing bath caddy the homeowner found -- it even has a space to hold a wine goblet!

We even spruced up the water closet with an oversized orchid decal:

Such a great idea! I was so happy to be a part of the Christmas magic!

You may recognize elements from this re-do in this master bedroom -- it's in the same home!

Great Room Makeover

In my first opportunity to work with this amazing client, I got to help with holiday decorations in her gorgeous home. I was so thrilled to hear from her later to get to make some permanent changes in her space. And don't worry - I've been back to change things up for the holidays, which is one of my absolute favorite things to do!

Today's post features the great room. This home is fairly new construction and while the bones were great, the feel was a little bland and contractor-like. The furniture placement also cut the room off, making it seem smaller.

My client wanted the home to have a farm-house feel and she loves neutrals. We started with the seating. The family of 5 needed to be able to sit in this room comfortably.

Two sofas replaced the sectional, allowing lots of seating, but opening the room between the eating area and seating area.  Two beautiful French antique chairs add even more places to relax and ottomans allow for even more seating with a tray for displaying items.

The fireplace underwent a major transformation:

My client loved a salvaged mantle from a local farm estate from Patina Antiques, Etc. A new quartz surround adds texture and a new overmantle in an antiqued paint finish with a pair of sconces give the fireplace more presence.

This view really shows how the new furniture opens up the space:

Another area that got an overhaul was an underused cabinet area. The homeowner wanted to create an office space for using the computer and paying bills. We removed all of the cabinetry, added gorgeous Anna French wallpaper, a custom desk made from local reclaimed wood and some display shelves. A new swing arm wall sconce allows for desk lighting.

The kitchen area got a transformation, too.
Stay tuned!

Improved Entry

This entry just needed a few finishing touches:

A round rug adds interest and new consoles fill the space.
A beautiful bench and some vintage accessories complete the look.

It makes a great first impression!
