Works in Progress: Red Spare Bedroom

Lots of projects on tap!  I'm loving this client's quirky sense of style and adventurous nature.  She barely flinched at my outlandish ideas.  How about a yellow dresser, a punchy updated damask for the windows and a red leopard print window seat cushion?!  Add a touch of black in the fabulous mirror and the homeowner's great Buddha lamp and we've got a fabulous makeover on our hands.  Stay tuned!

New Venture

Many a Monday has passed without a Makeover blog this summer, but please don't think I'm resting on my laurels -- just the (exciting) opposite!!  In addition to some really great projects happening (I promise to write about them soon), I have just launched my latest venture with my friend, Anita Gupta of  Maliha Creations called EyeCandy.  We think it's a great combination; Anita's fabulous desserts with custom displays designed by me!  Check it out and let me know what you think!  In the meantime, here is a refresher of the room I designed in Anita's home for showcasing her work.

This is how I "lodge".

I am not one to specify my own personal style, but I will safely say that "western" or "cabin" is not usually high on my list.  However, I had the opportunity to travel with my family to Denver recently and got to stay in a place that may make me change my mind.  The Hotel Monaco  is a Kimpton boutique hotel, one of my favorite resources for places to stay away from home.
 

Orange is expected for a western look -- cowhide, too, but I love the urban contemporary spin!  White leather, fabulous white lamps and an oversized headboard with a nod to the lasso.

 Love the flocked turquoise high-backed chairs with nailhead trim and the orange damask drapes.

Rustic logs are typical in a lodge, but these metal ones are a fresh, modern take.

New Dining Room

Today's feature is another room in a brand new house in need of some personality.

Before, this dining room was vanilla.  Not that I have anything against vanilla (it's my mother's favorite ice cream flavor), but it's so much better with something added to it!

The buffet is almost non-existent and the cream carpet was just too bland.

Now, we've given you something to see!

I added some height, width and visual interest with two tall etageres on either side of the buffet and tall buffet lamps on top.  The shelves lent an opportunity to add some more color and texture in the room with spa blue pottery and candles and natural elements of bamboo and wicker.  A floral print on the rug chosen by the homeowner is much more interesting than the plain cream one!

The beautiful shutters in the windows got lost in the vanilla-ness.

Now, the windows are a feature with beautiful scroll drapery.

Mammoth Lampshades

Today's Makeover Monday is another re-vamp of a thrift store find.  I fell in love with the scale of these lampshades and had to have them.  I was so excited to be able to use them in the Design House, but they weren't very exciting in their original state.

Using a great Waverly print (Sea Scallop) from U-Fab, I gave them a new, even funkier look.  Here's how:


Use the lampshade as a guide to cut out the fabric. 
Start at the seam and roll the lampshade along the fabric, guiding a pencil.

Add 1/2 inch to this line and cut along that line.

Starting at the seam on the lampshade, run a line of hot glue and secure the fabric. 
Continue with the glue gun at the top and bottom of the lampshade rim. 
Score the excess fabric and bend over the rim, gluing with the hot glue gun.
I chose to finish the inside with gimp to leave clean edges.
And here it is:

They make a great statement!
