I came across this post a while ago. This is an issue I am often confounded by and I think Lauren Leiss does a tremendous job of discussing a touchy subject. If you're considering decorating a room, whether with a designer or not, it's a good read.

We started with a builder's typical traditional white mantel with dental moulding. Getting rid of the mantel entirely, we added some contemporary sophistication with these spectacular metallic tiles.
The room's going to be a show stopper! Can't wait to reveal it finished!
