Brighter Dining Room and Kitchen

This dining room lacked lighting and the floor plan made traffic flow awkward.  We changed the orientation of the table, added some much needed light, softened the room with fabrics and gave some needed storage.

 Now, it's a beautiful dining room with an overized lantern light fixture and stylish lamps on the mantel.

This window needs dressed!

Now, the radiator has a beautiful cover, the windows are softened with rust-colored silk drapes and natural blinds provide privacy.

The corner of this kitchen is used for reading and hanging out with the family. The sofa looked small and uninspired.

 Now, it is a feature with beautiful linen soft roman window treatments .  Ledges display beautiful family photos.

More seating in a gorgeous combination of colors.

Soft roman shades add color and warmth.

Dining Room Console

Look what came for me today!!

It's a mirrored front console with round convex mirror accents.

I can't wait to get it assembled.

 My husband is my toughest client, but he has the best taste (in women especially)!

I'll post photos when I get it all together.

Works in Progress: Silver and Gold Dining Room

Here's a sneak peek at another project:  A beautiful silver and gold dining room.  Grey walls, painted chairs and a gorgeous gold beaded chandelier with touches of black for even more drama. 

It's going to be gorgeous!

Salle de bain to boot

This bathroom is an en suite to the French loft bedroom from last week's makeover.  The homeowners inherited the bright green wall color that overpowered the small space. 

 

Silver dots on white wallpaper tone down the walls, and sparkly accents make it extra-girly.  Did you notice the perfume bottle soap dispenser?  So fun!

Love these 'Ladies on the Go' prints behind the toilet, the sparkling shower curtain rings and the fancy fringed towels.  And you HAVE to see the rug:

Special Occasions: Fall Exterior

My family takes an annual beach trip at the end of September and usually, I just let the plants on my front porch die off so I can tear them out for my fall decor.  This year, the weather was cooler and wetter (not so good for the beach) but when I returned, my front door still looked like this:

Now, I'm no green-thumb, but I do not have the heart to ruin perfectly good plants on purpose.  So, I found these plant stand stakes at Tuesday Morning (love that place!) and raised my pumpkins above the still alive plants. 

We spent a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Sarah's Pick Your Own Pumpkins in Madison, VA and I fell in love with these sorghum and millet stalks.  Although I'm pretty sure they were laughing at me when I asked to purchase some (they're used for hay), I think they look beautiful in a fall arrangement.  I know some may say "less is more", but isn't it nice to have such a bountiful harvest?!

Note the orange leopard print rug.  I couldn't resist!

Another Fall vignette on my front porch with pumpkins and lanterns.  I'll leave these out until Christmas.......

And I just have to share.  The apple doesn't fall far from the tree.  Eliza had HER house decorated way before I had mine!

Little Lady's Boudoir: Blase to Oooh LaLa

This little girl's room has an adorable loft area for the bed, but the sloping walls made the window look small and disproportionate.  By angling the sides of a cornice box and swagging drapery panels in  French inspired print, the window becomes a feature. 

The custom cornice is personalized with an initial monogram decal, handpainted with stripes and trimmed with a wide black bow. 

To add more width to the bed area, oversized lampshades were covered in coordinating striped fabric with fun eyelash trim accents.  A few accent pillows with more dramatic black trim (feathers!), a fancy chandelier and the loft is transformed into a chic chambre.

 Turquoise crystal encrusted wallpaper, brown bedding with turquoise and chartreuse accents, mirrored tables, turquoise upholstery with nailhead trim.......Check out the ribbon covered lampshade for that beautiful green glass lamp.

Special Occasions: Fall

Have you ever noticed how catalogs are completely driven by the seasons?  The fall issues feature gorgeous, rustic furnishings with spicy wallcoverings and autumn foliage.  But you can create beautiful autumn vignettes without spending a fortune on completely re-doing your space.
For example, this is the settee I have in my foyer:

It is a dark aubergine color that reads almost brown in my window-less space.  An orange throw and silk pillow turn this into a fall look, complete with a pinecone wreath.

I am not as fortunate with background color in my living room, but I still found a way to integrate fall decor.  Faux white pumpkins and gourds in apothecary jars do not compete with my grey-blue scheme.  A spray of dried grass provides height and drama.

 Glass vessels are very versatile accessories and are great to change with the seasons.  For fall, Indian corn is a beautiful filler.  Grey feather-wrapped balls fill a bowl in a chrome finish.

Small Changes; Big Impact

 

This project is a good illustration of how a designer can pull a whole room together and give it those special finishing touches.  The homeowners had all of the pieces in place.  By adding wall color and trim to the drapes, the room becomes a tranquil retreat.  New artwork above the bed, a neutral rug, a trunk for much-needed storage and silvery-blue accessories complete the transformation.
